I’ve always loved the film “To Wong Foo, thanks for everything!, Newmar, Julie.” It’s the type of film that lingers with you—the tale, the characters, the memorable phrases like “See these nails?” So when I learned it was being made into a musical and would be performed at Hope Mill Theatre, I knew I had to go.
To begin with, transferring a loved film to the stage is a difficult process. There’s a lot to live up to, especially given how close the film is to many of our hearts. But what about this musical? It was great.
Thanks to the original writer, Douglas Carter Beane, the narrative stays dedicated to its beginnings. It felt like the film had come to life on stage, with many of our favourite scenes still there.
The stage design was brilliant. One minute you’re in the heart of a chaotic drag queen competition, and the next you’re in the quaint town of Snydersville. And let’s not forget about the outfits. Gregory Gale outdid himself. Each dress was a show-stopper, providing a unique flavour to each scene.
I really liked how the performance was sprinkled with modern comedy. Lines like “toss a twink” had the audience laughing and kept the show moving.
The characters, however, were at the core of the show. Their tales, hopes, and hardships remind us of a basic truth: love is love, regardless of who you are. Gregory Haney for his outstanding portrayal as ‘Noxeema Jackson,’ and Peter Caulfield for his portrayal as ‘Vida Boheme,’ deserve special mentions. And Pablo Goméz Jones in the role of ‘Chi Chi Rodriguez’? Brilliant, and well worth all of your princess points. As well all the cast bring so much magic to the show.
To wrap it up, if you’re planning on seeing a performance soon, make it “Too Wong Foo the Musical” at Hope Mill Theatre. It’s a terrific night out, whether you’re a fan of the film or new to the story. The show is runnign until December 17th. Get your tickets now for a night of humour, heart, and a little drag queen magic.
